Jenny's Springlea Garden

Fran and I moved into Springlea in May 2000. We have open farmland on two sides and panoramic views. The garden is approximately one third of an acre which gives plenty of scope for fruit, vegetables and flowers. Two ley lines cross just behind the greenhouse. The energy has steadily increased over the years. Unfortunately you cannot experience this from photographs.

I believe everything has some form of consciousness. I talk to the plants a lot of the time. I ask seeds to grow, explain to a plant why I am moving it, warn a rose before I prune it and ask the plant's permission to cut a flower to use in an essence. The garden also receives lots of Reiki both direct hands on healing and at a distance. Sprays, pesticides and fungicides have been banned altogether.

The garden design reflects the intention of creating a peaceful and healing space just to be. For me the energy needs to flow. There are no garden rooms here except for the summerhouse! Garden rooms can trap energy and actively prevent flow. The flower colours are restful and the borders colour co-ordinated. I am very conscious of the seasons and love the variety of planting that accompanies each season. I have achieved my ambition to have a flower out every day of the year.

The Springlea spiral

The Springlea spiral was added to the garden over the winter of 2006. Its purpose was twofold, to bring more energy into the garden which would help the plants grow and to provide a walkable meditative tool for us and any visitors.

There was only one place where it could go, around an existing weeping beech tree and incorporating the pineapple broom under which our late cat Samuel is buried.

We marked out the dividing beds with string wrapped around canes. The existing grass was to be the path and a continuous bed filled with plum coloured slate formed the divider. The outer ring of the spiral was filled with crystals and the inside rings were planted up with alpines and scattered with smaller crystals.

In the centre under the beech tree we placed a slate seat with a whole in the back of it. This gave room for the tree trunk and enabled anyone sitting on the seat to lean back against the tree and connect with its energy. We also placed a small table nearby.

On the 12th April we had an official opening celebration. Over twenty people came. After an opening ceremony everybody walked the spiral placing their crystal in a spot chosen by them.

Since then the spiral has had many visitors and received gifts of more crystals, plants and copper and glass items to hang on the tree.
